Lessons to learn from Amazon Prime Day for promotions

Lessons to learn from Amazon Prime Day for promotions

For the 20th birthday celebration of Amazon, they created a one day sale exclusively for Amazon Prime members. This strategy was to increase the sale and the number of prime users. Since this strategy increased Amazon promotion, there were discussions about it. Here are 3 lessons that you can learn for your ecommerce business to improve your promotion.

  • Excitement generation

Increase the excitement by creating buzz. Increase the awareness by promoting the sale prior one week to the date of sale. All over their site, they made sure to highlights the advantage of joining Amazon Prime and the deals for their Prime Day occasion. They created buzz by utilizing all the social media platforms available to showcase the users about the benefits and encourage others to sign up for prime membership.

Lesson: For your next event start promoting as early as possible. Utilize all the channels for promoting and creating buzz about your event.

  • Promote to your target audience

The aim of the event was to increase Prime signups. But the main goal was to reward their prime audience. According to Business Insider, each year about $1500 amount is spent by Amazon prime users. While the non-prime users spend less than half of this amount.  There were lighting fast deals set at particular time of the day. But because of this many of the customers were unable to buy the products. For example, discount on electronics gadget was over at 3 pm EDT, so most of the customers of West Coast were disappointed.

Lesson: Set an optimal time for users and see over it that there are enough products that will satisfy customer demand and will not disappoint them.

  • Promise what can you deliver

Amazon did such a wonderful job promoting this discount event that the promotional material and expectations began to grow with it. The lack of deals and website errors pissed off many users, of which frustration was clearly shown once the hashtag “PrimeDayFail” began to trend. Despite all these problems, Amazon came up with a speedy recovery and resolved all the issues.

Lesson: Prepare your business for worst situations and keep a team for resolving all the issues that can take place during any event.
